“Ladies and gentlemen of the media, Ghanaians here and abroad, let me tell you that according to figures from our own compilations, the former President, His Excellency John Dramani Mahama, won the election of indisputable manner. I just called him to congratulate him as President-elect of the Republic of Ghana. I recognize my defeat before the publication of the official results by the electoral commission, to avoid any risk of tensions and preserve the peace of our country,” recognized Mahamudu Bawumia on Sunday, December 8, 2024. Vice President of Ghana and the ruling party’s presidential candidate, his defeat by former President John Dramani Mahama in the presidential and legislative elections held on Saturday, December 7, 2024.

A major democratic act that denotes the degree of maturity of the Ghanaian political class. Because despite all the means at his disposal, the candidate of the ruling party did not want to confiscate the results of the presidential and legislative elections to stay in power. Since the announcement of the results yesterday, there has been total joy for Ngampowura Skido, a close friend of President-elect John Dramani Mahama and his party comrades who spent a sleepless night on Sunday at their party headquarters. A real sigh of relief for NDC activists who think that democracy is finally triumphant in the country of N’Krumah!

Who is John Dramani Mahama is the new President of the Republic of Ghana?

Born on November 29, 1958 in Damongo, Dramani is a Ghanaian statesman, member of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). He is the new president of the Republic of Ghana since December 8, 2024.

John Dramani Mahama received his primary education at the Newtown Experimental School in Accra (ANT1) before going to boarding school at Achimota Primary School. He completed his secondary education at Ghana Secondary School (Tamale, Northern Region). He continued his education at the University of Ghana, Legon, where he obtained a BA in History in 1981 and a Postgraduate Diploma in Communication Studies in 1986. As a student, he was a member of the Commonwealth Hall (Legon). He also studied at the Moscow Institute of Social Sciences in the Soviet Union, specializing in social psychology, receiving a postgraduate degree in 19881.

-Finally democracy triumphs in the land of N’Krumah!

Member of Parliament since 1997, Minister of Communication under President Jerry Rawlings (1998-2001), he was elected Vice-President of the Republic on December 28, 2008 alongside John Atta Mills. He takes office on January 7, 2009.

John Dramanin Mahama re-elected president of the republic.

On July 24, 2012, he replaced President John Atta Mills, who died at the age of 68 following a short and brutal illness, and was sworn in before the President of the Supreme Court, Georgina Wood. According to the terms of the Ghanaian Constitution, John Mahama is at the head of the country until December 2012, the date of the presidential election.
He was re-elected President of the Republic on December 7, 2012 and invested in his functions on January 7, 2013 despite the opposition which contested his accession to power.

On August 29, 2013, the Ghanaian Supreme Court confirmed John Dramani Mahama in his presidential functions following his contested election of December 7 and 8, 2012. The appeal to the Supreme Court by Nana Akufo-Addo, leader of the opposition, constitutes a real challenge for this country which wishes to embody a democratic model in sub-Saharan Africa. He ultimately lost the December 2016 election, retired and attended the inauguration ceremony of his successor, Nana Akufo-Addo.

In December 2016, John Dramani Mahama was part of the ECOWAS mediation team to resolve the post-election political impasse in The Gambia between the defeated incumbent president, Yahya Jammeh and the declared winner, Adama Barrow.

In August 2021, John Dramani Mahama begins a tour called “Thank you tour” in Ghana to thank Ghanaians for voting in the election Presidential Election 2020. He visited the Upper West, Upper East, North East, Northern and Savannah regions in the first phase. He met with chiefs and queens, religious leaders and also interacted with the media8.

On May 14, 2023, John Mahama was confirmed during the NDC party presidential primary as the opposition National Democratic Congress candidate to run in the 2024 general elections which he just won handily….

Thus, he is reborn from his ashes like American President Donald Trump who was forgotten for a few years.
Dramani Mahama, through this victory, has just demonstrated in the eyes of the Ghanaian people, his popularity and his attachment to his homeland.

This means that we can leave power with our heads down and return to it with our heads held high. Long live Ghanaian democracy, which has become a real textbook case for countries that have not yet understood anything!
